Implants

One of the most exciting advances in modern dentistry is the advent of the dental implant. This tiny device can make a large impact on the ability of your entire mouth to function properly. Unlike a bridge, or partial denture which can fill gaps where teeth are missing, implants actually become a part of you, and create a strong physical connection.

An implant is named for what it does. When your natural tooth is lost due to trauma, gum disease or decay, it may be replaced with an implant that takes the place of your natural tooth and root. First a small hole is made in the bone where your original tooth was removed, and a tiny metal implant is inserted. The implant is often rough, has grooves, channels, or small holes. These unique features are designed so that your bone grows in, through, and around the implant incorporating it into your anatomy. You quite literally, grow into it. The bottom portion of the implant acts as a receptacle for the second part of the implant process. Once the base of the implant is secure, the top part of the implant is placed into the bottom portion. Your implant is now ready for a crown that looks, feels, and functions like your natural tooth.

This process works well for a single tooth, but works equally well for the replacement of multiple teeth, a bridge, or for securing a denture. The physical connection to your jaw ensures that the restorations will feel and function like your natural teeth because they are implanted into your jaw, not just holding on to adjacent teeth or floating on the gums.
